We are delighted to present Fragmented Histories: Critical Writings on Cold War Legacy,
the latest publication produced within the framework of the Creative Europe project
(In)Visible Traces: Artistic Memories of the Cold War.
This volume brings together the results of the Art Criticism Training—an intensive two-day
workshop that brought together five emerging international art critics, curators, and cultural
professionals for a focused engagement with the cultural legacies of the Cold War.
Organized by BLOCKFREI and hosted at DAS WEISSE HAUS in Vienna on 11–12
November 2024, the program provided a vibrant platform to explore the intersections of
art, memory, and politics. Through different sessions, writing discussions, guided site
visits, and peer exchange, participants critically examined the ways in which artistic
practices can shape, challenge, and reimagine historical narratives.
Under the guidance of internationally renowned critic Kate Sutton and Vienna-based critic
Kathrin Heinrich, the participants developed a series of incisive essays—each shaped
through dedicated mentoring and editorial support. These texts form the core of this
publication.
