ŠUŠUR! Festival of Words 2019

2 – 4 August 2019
Library “Ivan Vidali”, Summer Cinema
Island of Korčula, Croatia

ŠUŠUR! Festival of Words 2019 is dedicated to children’s and youth literature, which is often out of focus, and which rarely gets a deserved place in a wider cultural-artistic sphere, even within literary-festivals.

At the level of an individual child, literature is a medium within which it learns vocabulary, acquires indirect experiences, and has the opportunity to see different images of the world, helping it to build the idea of how the world works and where the child’s interests lie. Often are the books first places where a child can hear some new words and learn about their meaning and concepts. Children’s literature is important because, among other things, it strengthens the domain of cognitive development and promotes deeper analytical thinking.
Based on two personal views and experiences, one reader can take on something entirely different about the literary work from the other reader. It also offers children and young people the opportunity for adopting and learning to value their own, but also other, cultural heritage. It supports the development of emotional intelligence and creativity and promotes the ability of social skills.

In addition, we want to revisit the past and discuss what children’s literature was like before, with what kind of themes and topics it once dealt with, reflecting on the values of past times. What it meant to be a child in different points of history, juxtaposing it to the present time situations.

We want to point out what kind of cultural space and resources children’s literature presents today, both for children and adults, and how they serve as an incentive for creativity development and as an instigator for experimenting with new ideas in different fields of expression. We intend to discuss with our guest authors how we can bring children closer to the literature and book culture, and how to access the creation of a new generation of readers. In this sense, we will relate literature with other areas of art such as film, theater, animation, dance.

Cultural Association KULA for the eighth consecutive year is organizing ŠUŠUR! Festival of Words which has slowly entered into the tissue of the old town of Korčula, giving to its citizens and visitors a unique multicultural quality program in the peak of the touristic season, equally educating and entertaining its audience.

The project is supported by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia and the Tourist Board of Korčula. It is realized in partnership with BLOCKFREI, the City of Korčula, Ivan Vidali Library, Korčula, Korčula Center for Culture, Portal Djeca.hr from Zagreb, and Proto doo from Belgrade.
